Year 6 visit the Library – January 2017

Year 6 had a fabulous time when they visited the Library to meet Deborah Cornwall and her Assistance Dog called Dillon.

Deborah explained how she became paralyzed after a climbing accident and so needed help around the house.

She showed us how she has trained Dillon to open draws to get medicine. He can even open the fridge to take out bottles of water! Dillon helps her to take off her coat and her gloves.

Deborah explained how she trains Dillon using dog treats and a basic “YES!” command. She even had Niamh pretending to be a dog in training as we gave her instructions!

The whole visit followed up Mr Smith’s Year 6 science topic looking at how animals have developed and how different dogs can be suitable for different things.

Deborah was very inspirational-and so was Dillon!
